Within the design-team it is only the architect who is involved in every stage of the design process - and the architect is, therefore, in the right position to lead the management of the design process. Our own approach is to inject hands-on creative energy and discipline - and manage the development of the design through a series of carefully sequenced design workshops - which are attended by team members who are authorised to commit to proposed decisions.Cost, programme, and quality aspects of projects are, we believe, greatly improved when the expertise of contractors and specialist sub-contractors is brought to bear at an early stage.

Our principal aim is to produce high quality architecture - with sustainable design at the core of our thinking. We work hard to understand our clients' objectives and priorities which enables us to add true value to their projects. Our buildings provide an appropriate balance between function, cost, and aesthetics - an approach that achieves an architecture that is confident, human in scale, and rich in detail. Our designs take full account of the context of the surroundings and aim to create a real sense of place for their users.

The original firm was founded fifty-five years ago and reached a peak of three hundred staff. Over this period the firm has been involved with very many projects of various types and sizes. These have generally fallen into the categories of work-space, residential, hospitality/leisure, and masterplanning.

Our team is led by Tim Hamilton and Robert Emery who have worked together for more than thirty-five years. They play complementary but overlapping roles in offering a flexible range of stand-alone services -- with Tim leading the earlier stages of projects and Robert leading detail design and quality control during the implementation stages.
